The Lone Star-Campion Connection Trail is part of the region’s larger Trinity Trail System, a multi-county project that will connect Dallas to Fort Worth. The Irving and Grand Prairie connection concludes a three-year, nearly $2.5 million dollar joint effort among Dallas County, the City of Irving and the City of Grand Prairie. This 2.65 mile trail project connects the City of Grand Prairies’ Lone Star Trail with the City of Irving’s Campion Trail South to provide 10 miles of continuous trail. Some of the obstacles of the project included designing\working within the Trinity River floodplain, obtaining easements from various types of landowners and coordinating the trail alignment with multiple entities. The process from taking raw floodplain land and massaging the environs to one which users can use for various experiences will be reviewed.
Learning Objectives for this session are to describe the design process in determining trail alignment, summarize the steps taken to obtain the necessary easements, and discuss trail details and lessons learned.
